Synopsis: The agricultural sector is one of the most important industries in the Indian economy. 60%of its population works in the industry contributing about 18% to India's GDP. By using normal agricultural methods (pesticides, herbicides) Environment as well as other organisms gets severely damaged. Well, we do have a sustainable alternative for it which is 'organic farming'. To know in detail about the same keep reading.

  1. Organic farming is a method of agricultural production that excludes the use of synthetic substances, such as pesticides, synthetic medicines & fertilizers. It aims at sustainable agricultural production.

  2. It helps to maintain environmental health by reducing the level of pollution. It reduces human and animal health hazards by reducing the level of residues in the product.

  3. It helps in keeping agricultural production at a sustainable level. It reduces the cost of agricultural production and also improves the soil health.

  4. To the maximum extent possible organic farming systems rely upon crop rotations, the use of crop residues, animal manures, legumes, green manures, mechanical cultivation, mineral-bearing rocks and aspects of biological control to maintain soil productivity.

  5. In organic farming chemical herbicides are not used. Different cultural practices like tillage, flooding, and mulching, can be used to manage the weeds. Besides biological (pathogen) methods can be used to manage loss due to weeds.

  6. Example of organic farming:-

    1. Use of manure and vegetable residues(compost).

    2. Use of local animal varieties and local animal breeds adapted to the particular conditions of that area.

    3. We can use bacterial and fungal biofertilizers:-

      1. rhizobium.

      2. Azotobacter.

      3. Azospirillium.

And there are many more such examples.
